Walter Scott: Open Ended / Painted Shut
New mural on the MAC’s wall at Place Ville Marie
The installation presented is a mural made with self-adhesive vinyl reproducing a comic strip designed by Scott for the MAC at Place Ville Marie. Open Ended / Painted Shut features Wendy at a loss for inspiration and obsessed with her artist’s block throughout a long, story-free day that ends with a well-lubricated evening and a false hope. The work continues Scott’s reflection on the figure of the artist, here underlining the anxiety caused by the pressure to produce.
Walter Scott is a Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) interdisciplinary artist who works in comics, drawing, video, performance, and sculpture. Questions of representation, cultural production, popular culture, and narrative construction are central to his practice. His comic series Wendy chronicles the continuing misadventures of a young artist working in a satirical version of the contemporary art world.
Walter Scott was born in 1985 on the Mohawk territory of Kahnawà:ke. He lives and works in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal.
